THE SHAPE OF A WALK, UK

These works were inspired by the process of walking the remarkable local topography of Helston and the surrounding area in Cornwall.
Surridge uses GPS technology to map where he is on Earth, which helps him connect to his surroundings. In the studio these shapes are layered into the work re imagining the walk from beginning to end as a mapped terrain across the canvas. The paintings often suggest archaeology - revealing traces, signs and codes; remembered and then transformed into works of ‘equivalence of experience’.

Pouring fluid paint, moving brush and rubber blade around the canvas often wet on wet to emphasise flow, like the movement of the human body walking through colour. He often finishes the paintings with precise punctuation marks in the form of dots, giving the paintings a suggestion of multiple readings - the location of the moving walker, the satellites above the Earth or planets and stars - all visual devices to take the eye around the painting.
