ALIGNMENTS

This series of paintings came about after a visit to the Cheesewrings, a granite Tor perched at the top of Stowe’s Hill in Bodmin, Cornwall. It is a natural geological formation of large spherical shaped stones stacked on top of each other formed by weathering. Working on a large scale these shapes formed the basis of experiments in the studio, improvising with a loaded brush using the whole arm movement to make large gestural brush strokes at the end of a long stick. The vertical sections in many of the paintings depict the idea of transition and transformation, Surridge likes to think that this pictorial device captures the act of archaeological scanning and the passing of time.
